Opportunity Knocks for Middletown’s Young Children Community Collaborative
Opportunity Knocks (OK) is a community collaborative of families, child care providers, health and mental health providers and others who want to make sure our youngest children are healthy and ready for school. We work together on issues like making sure families have access to developmental screening for their young children and child care teachers have support for creating healthy classrooms. There are two work groups: Social, Emotional and Behavioral Health and Nutrition and Physical Activity.

The Social, Emotional and Behavioral Health work group focuses on activities that support child development, like healthy relationships and enriching activites. We lead with our value that parents and families are their child’s first and most important teacher. We are working together on things like The Basics Middletown, Help Me Grow developmental screening, Circle of Security-Parenting for parents and child care teachers.
The Nutrition & Physical Activity work group focuses on activities that help make Middletown a healthier place for young children. We have helped preschools create healthier snack menus, we have gotten several employers to become breastfeeding friendly, we offer teacher training and have supported community and home gardening. We are working with other local groups on increasing access to healthy foods and supporting breastfeeding.
